My name is Kurt "Onestep" Cedergren and I am an Ultralight Backpacker from Maine.
My first backpacking trip was in 1972 with a group of guys called the Mosquito Hill Gang. We followed the Appalachian Trail for a week with an assortment of gear that ranged from heavy to heavier. This was not an ultralight backpacking trip! Hyperlink rollover
In 1976 I attempted a thru-hike of the 2000+ mile Appalachian Trail. That hike ended in Waynesboro VA after 700 miles and two months of backpacking.
After years of wanting to 'hike the whole trail', in 1996 I decided to complete my thru-hike a section at a time. What I had was a limited amount of time each year to devote to my section-hiking goal. I soon began to believe I would never complete the whole trail.
In 1999 I "discovered" the book Beyond Backpacking : Ray Jardine's Guide To Lightweight Hiking. In it I discovered his amazing philosophy of ultralight backpacking. Around the same time I finally got "on-line" and discovered both Michael's, and JohnO's, Ultralight Backpacking pages. A light went on! Maybe if I carry less weight, I could hike more miles per day, and that would allow me to FINISH MY A.T. SECTION-HIKE IN THIS LIFETIME !!!
My web site is intended to bring together in one place many of the resources I've found that have helped me to enjoy backpacking like never before. Check out my Gear Page to see what items make up my 8.8 lb, 3 season pack! Or follow the White Blaze's of my section-hiking adventures as I work towards completing the Appalachian Trail one section at a time. You can also find out what I did to get into shape and what I do to maintain that Fitness. In addition, I've included a Fourm where you can ask questions and get answers about Ultralight Backpacking. Theres also a Live Chat room where every Tuesday night at 9PM you can hang out and talk hiking! And finally, I've also included a Links page, sort of a Blue Blazed trail that leads you to some of my favorite Ultralight Backpacking websites. It includes a section where you can add your favorite links!
Is Ultralight Backpacking for you?... "maybe". You need to make that decision for yourself.
Each one of us must HIKE OUR OWN HIKE... here's mine.

06-20-03:In April, Katadin Goddess and I hiked 98 miles of the AT from Harpers Ferry WV to Boiling Springs PA. I now have 10 miles remaining to complete the whole trail "one section at a time"!
09-13-03: Last week I walked a 5 mile section in New Hampshire that I missed in 1998. During this day hike I met several northbound 'thru-hikers'. In time I'd like to attempt another thru-hike. Till then, I still have 5 miles in Maine to complete my section hike of the AT !
10-04-03: Today I completed the Appalachian Trail. This last section was in Maine from Moxie Pond Rd to the Summit of Pleasant Pond Mtn. I started this "2000 mile journey" in August 1972... and to steal a quote from Ed Garvey... it's truly been an "adventure of a lifetime".
